The magic of Marianne

I’d like to tell you all about a wonderful horror series I have just finished watching on netflix. This is a French series but I watched the version which is dubbed into English. it turned out to be well worth a viewing. In fact it’s one of the most impressive horror series I’ve seen in a long time.

It involves a female horror writer whose novels revolve around an evil witch called Marianne. This Marianne was a witch some time previously but the writer (who is named Emma), when writing about her, brings her back to life and returns her powers to her. The books are a money spinner for Emma but this comes at a severe cost to herself. Soon everyone close to her is being terrorized by this witch. To begin with she takes over the body of the mother of a childhood friend. Then, when she has outlived her usefulness, she takes on a new form but only after rendering the poor woman blind.

There is a lot of angst in the story which unfolds. The character of Emma is something of a tortured soul herself (much like all horror writers, I guess!). Throughout her life she has made wrong choices and bad decisions and these come back to haunt her just at the moment when she should be at her happiest (ie experiencing fame and fortune as an author). But as I say a great cost has to be paid for that success and she is having to pay it.

I don’t want to give away too much of the plot here, but suffice it to say it is tremendous entertainment and a really clever and expertly put together series. I never knew the French did horror so well! The cast is splendid, especially Victoire Du Bois who plays the main character.

Almost as soon as I began watching ‘Marianne’ which opens with Emma taking part in a book signing, I became gripped by the action which unfolded and I remained gripped by it right to the end.

I highly recommend this series to anyone out there interested in a few good scares (and let’s face it: who doesn’t like a good scare?). It is one of the best horror series I have seen in a while and I’ve seen some good ones. But this one had something special about it, that almost unquantifiable something which sets it apart from the crowd.
